ITA-CET – Background
 

The ITA Strategy 2000 has pointed Training and Education as one of the priority actions of our association. Training and Education have been confirmed as one of the most important challenges and needs of the ITA for the coming future by the ITA Strategy 2007.
In last years, the ITA has implemented several actions related to Training and Education, creating an environment favourable to establish a major body inside our association, able to coordinate all actions related to Training and Education. Some of the actions already implemented are:

• Creation of the ITA Working Group 18 on Training.
• Establishment of the ITA headquarter inside an educational institution (EPFL, Switzerland), since 2002.
• Establishment of the concept of the ITA University Network, aiming to facilitate training and education actions, exchange of students and professors, interaction of research, products and services, among universities dealing on tunnelling.
• Creation of Training Sections (short-courses) on the occasion of the ITA World Tunnel Congresses, since 2005 (Istanbul).
• Endorsement of Professional Master Courses on Tunnelling, in international and national levels, starting at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy), in 2003. Besides Turin, other master courses have also been approved in Madrid (Spain) and Lausanne (Switzerland).
• Creation of a task force on Training and Education to study the perspectives of these actions for the future of the ITA and how to implement and coordinate them.
   

ITA-CET – Mission and Objectives
 

The objectives of the ITA Committee on Education and Training (ITA University Network) are:

• To coordinate the interaction and exchanges among the member universities.
• To plan, coordinate and prepare the contents of training sessions and short-courses organised and promoted by the ITA.
• To establish the contents, frames, structures and requirements of the professional master courses endorsed by the ITA, as well analyse the proposal for endorsement.
• To disseminate training and educational materials (texts, presentations, videos etc.).
   

ITA-CET – Structure

 
The University Network is run by a board composed of six members: four elected among the member university representatives, the animateur of the ITA WG-18 on Training and one indicated by the ITA Executive Council. Among these six members, one is the chairperson and other the vice-chairperson. The term for each board is three years.
 

ITA-CET – Membership
 

Members of the ITA University Network are universities and companies dealing with tunnelling education or research. They should apply and be accepted by the committee board. The membership is free of charge.
 

ITA-CET – How to become member
 
ITA invites all parties worldwide interested in the field of Education and Training for Tunnelling and Underground Space Use to become member and to co-operate within the ITA-CET. There will be only corporative members, no individual ones. The membership in the ITA-CET has to be confirmed by the General Assembly of ITA, but is not bound to membership in ITA or vice versa. Of course, a membership in both is possible and welcome.

Foundation ITACET

In 2009, ITA decided to support the creation of a Foundation for Education and Professional Training in the field of Tunnelling and Underground Space.
Any concerned organization can become founder or grantor of the foundation.
